Are women’s
representations in horror films to satisfy the male audience through the
gaze?
Films
Item
1: Nightmare on Elm
Street 2010
I
have chosen this film because women are represented as vulnerable and weak in
this film, also it offers a range of shots and camera angles that stresses the
horror genre. Also women are represented as the victim, which is something i
can talk about which relates to my question. I have used this film because i
want to compare it to the 1984 version, and compare how women are represented
differently in the different years and how its evolved over time. This is a
good film to use because it shows how women are represented within the horror
genre.
Item 2: Wrong Turn 2003
I
have chosen this film as the women are represented also as victims,
however within this film, there is two representing of women, the clumsy
women who dies first and the heroic women who survives at the end. I
will talk about how these different representations of women are portrayed
throughout the use of camera and technical conventions. Also within this film
the male gaze can be applied through the use of mine en scene clothing.
Item 3: The shinning 1980
I
have chosen this film as one of my focus films because the women in this film
is one of the main characters however she is represented as weak
and vulnerable to her husband as he changes. The representation of the
women is she wants to protect her son, which makes her representation of a
loving mother. However there is an alternate representation as she begins to
fight back her husband as he attacks her, this challenges
the stereotypes of women in horror films.

4 : MulveyvisualPleasureNarrativeCinema.pdf
I have chosen this source to use for information because its based on the Laura mulvey theory, the male gaze, which i will use as one of my theories for my work. This source talks about how women are images and man is the bearer of the look, which means the women are there to be looked at by men. This links to my question of how women are represented to audiences. This source also talks about how the women is the damsel in distress and the men are the heroes that needs to save the women. This source will be useful because it explains how women are represented.
Item

I
have chosen this link to talk about because it is about women representation in
horror films and how women are portrayed in the horror genre. This is
a good link to use as it provides information about my topic and focuses
on the genre i am talking about. It talks about the diversity of
females within the horror genre.
Item
8:http://www.bbc.co.uk/culture/story/20150805-are-horror-films-inherently-sexist
This
link talks about sexism within the horror genre, this links to my topic
about the male gaze and the representation of women as this BBC article talks
about how horror films turns women into victims, so i will use this
link because it explains my point of the male gaze. This source also talks about female directors and their views on how women are judged because of their sexuality.
Item 9: https://screampsychohorror.wordpress.com/representation-of-women-in-horror-films/
I
have chosen this link to assist with my work because it talks about how
women are portrayed as the damsel in distress and are attacked by a killer for
doing something wrong. It also talks about how women are known as
the hyper sexual damsels. It also talks about the stereotypes of
women within the horror genre.
Item 10: https://medium.com/@Ghill_deRozario/are-horror-movies-inherently-misogynistic-or-are-they-just-misunderstood-76990d8753aa
I have chosen this source for information as it talks about how women are portrayed as hyper sexualised and trashy within the horror genre. it also talks about voilence against women in the horror genre and how a death is based on gender/race and sexuality. This website also explains how there is always a female protagonist who stays alive till the end of the film, this is called the "final girl" trope, this characters is always targeted by something evil, usually a man, which makes the women a victim. I will use this to back up my argument of how women are portrayed in horror films for the male audience.
Interviews
Item 11: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLF6sAAMb4s
This
YouTube video talks about the test for women in films. Its all about the three
tests, the first being the film has to have two women in it, they talk to
each other and they talk to each other about other things rather than
men. I chose this YouTube video because it represents women as being
relent on men, not only in the horror genre but in any film.
Newspapers
Item 12: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/halloween/11200852/Horror-the-film-genre-where-men-dont-have-all-the-fun.html
I have chosen this newspaper article to
use for a source of information as it talks about how other articles talk about
how "Women are either blonde fodder for rampant serial killers or the
petrified victims of supernatural creatures". This shows how women are represented
as victims and weak.
Rejected
http://2013.neutralmagazine.com/article/the-final-girl-gender-in-horror/
I have not chosen this magazine article to
use for my research because it talks about the idea of feminism and more
about how the slasher has changed over the years but It also talks about the
way in which there is a high level of sexual potency. Also talking about the
high level of violence within women in slasher films, whereas I'm
talking about the horror genre.
